Communities designed for: Board and Care homes for elders are often referred
to as residential care homes, Board and Care homes are found in any
neighborhood, these facilities grant non-medical care for elderly adults.
Normally in a single family residence, residential care homes usually serve
between two and six patients, they provide a home-like environment for
people who need assisted living but might be anxious by larger facilities.
These facilities are a live-in housing and care option for people, some of
these facilities may also be licensed for skilled medical needs, such as a
feeding tube or daily injections (Hospice Care). Board and Care homes are a
good choice for individuals who are looking for a smaller-home-like setting.
They may choose to have their home-cooked meals in the dining room. Just
like a residence, the home will have a front porch or back porch and a
garden. The home has live-in caregivers along with visiting or live-in
registered nurses which is comparable to a nursing home or assisted living
community. There is one caregiver for every three or four residents. In many
of these nursing homes and assisted living facilities it may take 15 to 40
minutes to have a caregiver give assistance to a resident.
A residential
care home is a better choice for a weak adult who can benefit from more
individual care. Some facilities provide assistance for elders with bladder
and bowel incontinence, oxygen use and close supervision for seniors in
wheel chairs or who ambulate with canes or walkers. Because residential care
homes vary so greatly, its important to evaluate the needs of the resident,
deciding if they need around-the-clock caregiver attention. The cost for a
living in a Board and Care home is regularly half the cost of a nursing home
and even more affordable than assisted living community. Although prices
vary, the costs is usually between $1500 to $4500 per month, Some homes
charge $5000 to $6000 per month but these are typically private communities,
beach homes or homes that specialize in Alzheimers/Dementia care. This type
of care home is a good fit for many elderly adults. Many of these homes can
provide care until the end of a life, and helps residents feel like they are
living in their own homes.
